Builder Profile Stewart Hunsaker. Avid Short Speedwing N8226 started life in 1990 in Oregon. It was built wath a Soob motor in it, but never certified or flown. It was sold twice before we got it, still uncertified. We bought it with the extended wing kit and basically took the airplane apart; extended the wings, added Grove gear and a heaver tailspring. The wing of this airplane had been modified to what the Kitfox folks have since done, only the original builder had taken 1" PVC pipe, cut of a slice and epoxied it to the leading edge of the wing. Our wing also has the metal leading edge. The airplane is hangered in KBMC in northern Utah. It took it's first flight in late feb. Both my partner, Dan RIchards and I are working on our tailwheel endorsements and can't wait to fly the little bugger.
The soob seems to be performing very well with no
signs it was going to run hot. One of the wierd
issues with the airplane was with weight and balance.
Our Avid has the main and a backup battery in the
tail. Even with both wingtanks full, our CG barely
comes into the forward limit. We need to throw a 10
pound toolbox into the baggage compartment to move us
back into somewhere near the center. That soob
hanging on the front sure is a lot of weight.
